The La Grange Police
Department hires full-time Police Officers from an eligibility list, which
is established every two years through a competitive testing process.
A process conducted in August 2007 will create a list that will likely run
through Fall of 2009.
No testing is anticipated and no applications will
be accepted until the next process (in 2009).
- The La Grange Police Department DOES NOT have a lateral entry or
accelerated entry hiring plan for full-time police officer positions.
Part-Time Police Officer Positions
Applications are not currently being accepted for this position
(December 2007).
- Part-time
Officers support the mission of the police department through focused
assignments, such as traffic safety and enforcement.
Applicants MUST have a certificate of
completion of the Police Officer-Basic Recruit Academy.
- Part-time certifications through the PEP or STARR programs are
not the
equivalent of the Police Officer-Basic Recruit Academy.

not qualify).

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE LA GRANGE POLICE DEPARTMENT
The purpose of the following information is to provide you with sufficient
knowledge about the La Grange Police
Department, so that you can make a decision as to whether or not
you wish to test competitively for the next police applicant
eligibility list.
COMMUNITY INFORMATION
The Village of La Grange was incorporated in 1879. It is a stable, mature
community of 15,608 residents located in the western
suburbs of Cook County. La Grange encompasses 2.5 square miles and is
predominately a residential community with a strong central business district,
two industrial areas, and two historic districts. In 1986, La Grange adopted a
Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district. The median income is $80,342 and
the median home value is
estimated to be in the neighborhood of $271,800
(2000 Census).
POLICE DEPARTMENT
The
La Grange Police Department consists a Chief of Police, three Lieutenants, five
Sergeants, and a staff of full-time Patrol Officers and Investigators. A
newly established corps of part-time police officers also assists the members of
the police department.
TRAINING INFORMATION
Officers who are appointed to the department will be required to attend twelve
weeks of basic training at one of the authorized training academies. Three of
these academies are located in the Chicago Metropolitan
area, and there are also training academies in Springfield
and Champaign. Officers receive their full salary and
benefits while they are attending the Academy.
Each recruit must:
- Successfully complete the Basic Recruit Program and
graduate from the designated Police Academy.
- Pass the required examination administered at the Academy
to be certified as a Police Officer in the State of Illinois.
- After graduation from the academy, the officer will be
assigned to general police duties under the supervision of a Field Training
Officer. The Field Training Officer will acclimate the officer to the
department and his or her role as a police officer for the Village of La
Grange. The officer must successfully complete the field-training program to
the satisfaction of his/her FTO and supervisors.
Failure to accomplish these goals, and/or failure to complete
18 months probation, will result in dismissal of
the police recruit from the La Grange Police Department.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The La Grange Police Department has permanent shifts. Shift adjustments are made
as necessary to maintain appropriate staffing. Currently, the regular shift
hours are:
8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
4:00 PM - 12:00 AM
12:00 AM - 8:00 AM
The working schedule follows a "6 on - 2 off" pattern, with one
three day weekend per month. At the discretion of the Chief of Police, officers
can be assigned to shift schedules to meet the demand of the department.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
The La Grange Police Department has a tuition reimbursement
program that reimburses officers for college education credit hours based on
grade achievement and available funding.

Officers work most holidays unless it is a regularly scheduled
day off, but are paid for all nine holidays.

FLOATING HOLIDAYS
Annually, officers receive two 8.25 hrs. floating holiday leave time, which
shall be scheduled and approved by the Chief of Police or his/her designee.
SICK LEAVE POLICY
Employees earn 8.25 hrs. of sick leave for each full month of employment. Sick
leave may be accumulated to a maximum of 1,782 hrs.
UNIFORM ALLOWANCE
Probationary officers are provided with uniforms along with a $150 leather
allowance and a $125 body armor allowance. Sworn officers receive a uniform
allowance of $600 per year after completion of the probationary
period.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE
Bereavement leave is granted for employees to attend the funeral of immediate
family. Up to 3 days are allowed if said death or place of funeral occurs within 250
miles of La Grange and up to 5 days are granted if said death or place of funeral occurs
over 250 miles of La Grange.
GROUP HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM
The Village of La Grange pays for the officer’s health insurance. Family
coverage is a shared expense. The officer pays 10% and the village the remaining
90%. Dental care is available with the employee paying the total cost. Life
insurance coverage includes a $50.000 policy.
PENSION PLAN
A separate application must be made to the La Grange Police Department Pension
Board for acceptance into the Police Pension Plan. Officers may qualify for
pension after 20 years of service and after 50 years of age. The basic pension
is 50% of the officer’s salary during the last 12 months of active service.
Pensions can escalate to 75% of salary based on length of service.
